Robert Scholes, owner of Nordlicht Kennels, and breeder of over 50 AKC champions joined with Donna Sater of Saterhaus German Shepherds to continue this tradition of excellence. With Robert's passing in August of 2006, Donna is now carrying on this successful breeding program.
This is our new state of the art kennel in our new home in Eastern Washington. It is made out of a converted three car garage. It has eight runs for adult dogs that are 20 feet long and two large puppy pens.
This is a view of the interior of our new kennel. We are not a big kennel, we only keep about four brood bitches and one stud dog. We have found that this works out to be a perfect size kennel for the small breeder.

Dragon Lady ROM and her Sons
INT. CH. Ariana Dragon Lady Nordlicht, ROM
Ch Bravo's Do or Die of Nordlicht OFA
Res Best in Futurity NW Region 2002
Do or Die is a Dragon Lady son
We have used Do or Die at stud sparingly here at Nordlicht. From less than ten litters he currently has four champions, Ch Bravo's Fly for Freedom, and Ch Saterhaus TJ of Nordlicht, Ch Sater-Nordlicht To Die For, Ch Bravo's American Freedom Wellborn and Chevelle of Sater-Nordlicht has 11 pts/ 1 Major. There are several more very promising younger progeny coming up behind these mentioned above. He is clearly on track to win his ROM early in life.
Judges who have awarded this dog his wins: Joan Fox, Lew Bunch, Jami Walker, Kathy Field Casteel, Norman Kenny, Beverly Capstick, Terrie Miles Green, Carol White-Moser, Twyla Minor, and Helen Gleason. He has won an equal amount under Specialty judges as well as All-Breed judges. He finished at just over two years of age, shown very few times.
Do or Die just turned 6 years of age and
has a great future ahead of him not only as a show dog but also as a
productive stud dog.

About Our Breeding
It's importance can never be underestimated.
Genetics are the building blocks of the whole process of generation advancement, that is to say genetics are selected and used to make generation advancements. The two terms go hand in hand with a great deal of closeness. The genetics we have today are based on the generation advancements from the past. Generation turnovers, advancements and movements are what has made the breed change from the past. So while genetics are important it is the generation movements that dictate what the genetics are. Generation advancements are the philosophy of breeding, and the genetics are the tools to carry out this philosophy. (note: click on Breeding Policy on the left hand column of this page for a more indepth discussion of this concept)
One of our goals with every breeding we do is to build pedigree. In this way our story is told as each pedigree is packed with information. It is from this base that the future generations will be constructed. We do not breed specifically for this or that litter, but rather for what we will be getting five or ten years down the road as they will be influenced by the generations that preceded them. This is the blueprint from when the next generations will be constructed. Knowledge of ancestry is the integral part of sustainability.
This sustainability is based on a strong bitch family, going back to our Heart's Desire of Bob-Lyn ROM, and comes down to the present through Sel Ch Final Fantasy of Nordlicht ROM, Ch Ariana's Dragon Lady of Nordlicht ROM (pend) and on to Jami of Sater-Nordlicht.
From this line of brood bitches we have a consistent picture of very prolific and fecund bitches. This is breeding stock that have normal heats, are easy to breed, conceive on every breeding, produce large litters of problem free pups, and are very maternal, meaning that they are excellent mothers and heavy milkers. They raise fat healthy pups that are mentally sound and ready to go out into new homes.
Knowing your bitch families and their history helps the breeder make better informed choices concerning future breedings.
Why we do not breed for single traits:
Watch here for new litter announcements.
We are a small kennel of only four brood bitches which we have carefully selected. In the last six years Sater-Nordlicht has bred twelve champions. Only one was finished here at Sater-Nordlicht. The other ten were finished by our clients, and this is one of the things we are most proud about. We have sold our good ones, and the great homes who got them made the most of the dogs they got. They have worked with us and have had the understanding to condition, train and exhibit their dogs in the way that brings success. This is not to mention the many other dogs who were successes in a multitude of other ways achieving exactly what their owners wanted from them as well as dogs from our kennel who became Champions in many other countries, notably Mexico, Columbia, Venezuala and Canada. It is to these people that our heartfelt thanks and congratulations go out. You are all just great. There are still more dogs out there that are currently working on their championships and no doubt some of them will also be added to our list of Am Champions as well as many other titles.
What does this mean to you? A puppy from one of our litters will carry the bloodlines to be showable, breedable, and just a great family pet, as well as suitable for all kinds of training. It will mean you will get a healthy, vital and strong puppy that will not require trips to the vet. It means your pup is guaranteed to be in good health when you get it, and that the hips and elbows are guaranteed. It also means that you will have a beautiful specimen of the breed with a pup that represents the breed well. You will have a pup that you will be proud of and one that will be your constant companion and member of the family.

Ch Hard Drive is a beautiful dog. Hard Drive is sired by Ch Richterslusts Mr T of Nordlicht, a Nationally ranked dog. His dam is Ch Saterhaus Radcliffe who is a Sel Ch Saterhaus McKinley ROM daughter. We think the combination of these bloodlines with our top producing Dragon Lady will be an outstanding breeding. Dragon Lady has already produced four champions and there are more out there being shown. She could end up with several more progeny that win their championship. This is an opportunity for healthy, problem free pups that have potential to win both in and out of the show ring.

American German Shepherd dogs are our specialty. We have over 30 years experience in the German Shepherd dog show ring and shows around the world. We also raise German Shepherd dogs for Police K-9, Search and Rescue, Tracking, Training, Family Pets, Seeing Eye, or simply Basic Obedience. In this web site you will find tips on how to breed dogs, show dogs, train German Shepherd dogs for show, groom German Shepherds and professionally exhibit your own dog. We will also show you our recent breedings and puppies available, and offer tips and advice on how Sater-Nordlicht German Shepherd dog bloodlines have been created.
Robert Scholes owned and operated Nordlicht Kennels in Bothell, Washington. For over 30 years Robert bred, showed, trained, groomed, and handled his own dogs; with over 40 champions bred at Nordlicht, over 100 German Shepherds finished by Nordlicht, and 100 dogs of other breeds shown to their championships. Nordlicht has had many ROM producers as well as the 1# ROM Bitch and 1# Stud Dog for several years. Robert has bred and handled many champions in both Canada as well as the USA and around the world. One of the crowning achievements at Nordlicht before Robert's retirement, was the purchase, development and creation of Select Am Can Ch Nike Clayfield Andretti ROM ROMC, one of the all-time great stud dogs in the history of the breed.
The Nordlicht and Saterhaus breeding philosophies are being carried on by Donna Sater under the kennel name Sater-Nordlicht. This web site is designed to help and forward information to the people in the German Shepherd Dog world..
Sater-Nordlicht is now located in the beautiful country side of Northeast Washington, near a small town surrounded by rural farms. Sater-Nordlicht is located on 80 acres to raise some of the finest German Shepherds. We are not a large operation, restricting ourselves to only a few litters a year to ensure the finest in socializing and proper evaluation of all our dogs. Only the finest food is fed our dogs to produce maximum growth and proper nutrition. We treat our dogs like athletes.
Our bitches are bred only once a year, and only after they are mature adults. This practice has proven to produce bigger litters with less stress to the mothers and healthier better adjusted puppies. Our puppies are kept isolated from all outside diseases until proper vaccinations have been given. All puppies and adults receive quality veterinary care.
Sater-Nordlicht also raises some top quality Polled Hereford Cattle. This is and invaluable asset to the raising of German Shepherds. The dogs learn the proper way to associate around farm animals such as cows and calves, chickens, & cats, as well as other dogs making a well rounded development. This is Internat'l Ch Reflections of Nordlicht, who is a natural at herding. Ch Riata of Nordlicht was also one of our dogs to win a Herding Champion title which we are very proud. .
One of our dogs who was sold to Alaska won the coveted title of Dog Hero
of The Year when he found his 10 year old after he was buried in a snow bank
and another saved the life of her owner during a medical emergency.
Although we do some showing of dogs, mostly our interest is to breed top quality German Shepherds for the pleasure of others. Over the years our dogs have fulfilled services in the police departments for Seattle and Alaska, where one of our dogs was awarded the Dog Hero of the Year when he found a lost boy covered by snow. Many of our dogs have been trained for all types of titles such as Obedience, CD, CDX, UD, Herding titles, Agility Courses, Search and Rescue, and just good family dogs. Shutzhund titles have also been obtained by our German Shepherds. Most of these titles were obtained by the wonderful owners of these dogs. The testimonials and long term friendships that have been made with the owners of our dogs is of great satisfaction to us. The following web pages relate to up and coming litters and a brief description of breeding philosophy, as well as a page dedicated to 2x Sel. Ch Nike Clayfield Andretti ROM ROMC, a dog who still has an influence on the breed today. .
Much of this website was designed by Robert Scholes. It is being updated and the breeding program carried on by Donna Sater.
Donna Sater began showing and training German Shepherd dogs in the early seventies under the kennel name Saterhaus. She has bred or co-bred over 20 U.S. Champions. Many were also Canadian Champions and obedience and herding titled. Several of her dogs and bitches have earned ROM titles and Champion McKinley was awarded 2SELECT and Award of Excellence.
